Why keep a trading journal?

You know the pattern: a good week, then a bad week that wipes it out - and no clear record of what changed. The spreadsheet you started in January has three entries. The screenshots folder is chaos. You know you should be tracking, but every tool you've tried is either a glorified P&L log or takes ten minutes per trade.

A trading journal is a structured record of every trade you take - the thesis behind the entry, the chart context, and a post-trade review. Most retail traders repeat the same mistakes because they trade from memory instead of from data. A trading journal fixes that - not by logging P&L in a spreadsheet, but by capturing the reasoning behind each trade: the thesis, the chart context, what confirmed the entry, and what you'd change next time.

The purpose isn't record-keeping - it's pattern recognition. After 50+ documented trades, your journal reveals which setups are genuinely profitable, which are break-even disguised as winners, and which are costing you money. Without this feedback loop, improvement is guesswork.

"Fewer than 1% of day traders sustain profitability after fees over multiple years." - Barber, Lee, Liu & Odean, Journal of Financial Economics, 2014.

Services segment growing 18% YoY. P/E at 26 - below 5-year average after the January pullback. Adding to core position on weakness. Plan: hold 12+ months, reassess after next two earnings.

3-Month Review

Services beat estimates again. Held through March volatility - almost sold at −8% but reviewed my thesis and the fundamentals hadn't changed. Glad I held. Adding another 20 shares at current level.

Whether you make 3 trades a month or 30 a day - the analysis process is the same.

Each trade in My Trading Force captures pre-trade thesis, post-trade review, chart screenshots across multiple timeframes, setup tags, rule flags, and an emotional journey tracker - everything you need to turn individual trades into a system that compounds.

Every trade you take is data you can learn from.

What makes this trading journal app different.

Most trading journal software is built around trade logs with charts bolted on. My Trading Force is a free trading journal app built around structured analysis - the thesis, the review, and the feedback loop that turns logging into learning.

Structured Analysis

Every trade gets a pre-trade thesis and post-trade review - not just a row in a log. Chart screenshots, notes, and multi-timeframe context live together on a visual timeline.

Hashtag-Based Pattern Tagging

Tag every trade with your own setup vocabulary -#breakout, #NFP-fade, #revenge-trade. The platform aggregates results by tag so you can measure which patterns produce edge.

Flags & Rule Tracking

Attach binary checks to each trade - did you follow your entry rules? Did you honor your stop? Flags surface discipline drift before it costs you.

AI on Your Terms

Connect your own AI assistant from Claude, GPT, Gemini, or Mistral - setup takes 2 minutes. Ask AI to review your week, find patterns, or challenge your thesis. No markup - you pay your provider directly.

Example tags from real trading workflows - create your own for stocks, forex, crypto:

#breakout #NFP-fade #gap-fill #carry-trade #leverage-blowup #VWAP-bounce #scalp #fomo-buy #revenge-trade #DCA-entry #London-open #funding-rate

Who needs a trading journal?

Forex traders journaling EUR/USD sessions, carry trades, and news fades
Crypto traders tracking BTC perpetuals, altcoin setups, and DCA entries
Stock and options traders reviewing thesis-driven entries across any ticker
Day traders, swing traders, and beginners who need structure from day one

What 50 trades reveals.

After enough tagged trades, the analysis surface shows which setups produce edge - and which ones cost you money. Here's an example of what your data could reveal.

Performance by tagSample data for illustration

#breakout1872% +1.8R
#VWAP-bounce1267% +1.4R

#NFP-fade7 43% −0.2R
#revenge-trade1127%−1.6R
#fomo-buy1020%−2.3R
The insight: In this example, #breakout setups are profitable (+0.94R expectancy) while #revenge-trade and #fomo-buy are bleeding money. Without tagging, this pattern is invisible.

Trading journal FAQ.

What is a trading journal, and why do traders keep one?

A trading journal is a structured record of every trade you take - the thesis behind the entry, the chart context, the exit logic, and a post-trade review. Unlike a trade log that only captures P&L, a journal captures the reasoning - so you can review which decision patterns lead to profitable outcomes and which ones cost you money. Research by Barber, Lee, Liu & Odean (Journal of Financial Economics, 2014) found fewer than 1% of day traders sustain profitability after fees; the profitable minority shared one trait: structured review of past trades.

Is My Trading Force free?

My Trading Force is free during the Open Beta - no credit card, no time limit, no feature gate. When paid plans are introduced, the core journal will stay free for solo traders. We will publish pricing well in advance. You can export all your data as JSON anytime from the data-rights page.

Does it work for forex, crypto, stocks, and futures?

Yes - My Trading Force is market-agnostic. The structured analysis process works the same whether you journal EUR/USD forex trades, Bitcoin perpetuals, SPY stock options, or ES futures contracts. Log any instrument, tag your setups with hashtags, and the analysis surface aggregates performance across all markets in one place.

How is My Trading Force different from TradeZella, Tradervue, or a spreadsheet?

Most trading journals - including TradeZella, Tradervue, and TraderSync - are built around broker auto-import and trade metrics. My Trading Force is built around structured analysis: pre-trade thesis, post-trade review, and hashtag-based pattern tagging. The difference is that MTF captures the "why" behind each trade, not just the "what." It also ships with bring-your-own-key AI (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Mistral) at no markup - you pay your provider directly.

Does it connect to my broker?

Trades are entered manually - about 30 seconds each. That's by design: the act of logging forces you to revisit each trade deliberately, which is itself structured review. Auto-import is on the roadmap, but many traders in the beta find that manual entry is when their best insights surface.

How does hashtag-based pattern tagging work?

You create your own hashtags -#breakout, #NFP-fade, #revenge-trade, #gap-fill - and attach them to trades as you journal. Over time, the analysis surface aggregates your results by tag: win rate, average R, frequency, time-of-day distribution. You stop guessing which patterns produce edge and start knowing. The tags are yours - you define the vocabulary that matches how you actually think about setups.

Does it have AI?

Yes - bring your own API key from Claude (Anthropic), OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Mistral. Your key is AES-encrypted at rest and decrypted only in memory at the moment of each request. We never charge a markup on provider rates, never store your prompts or responses, and never use your trading data for model training.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes - My Trading Force is a fully responsive web application that works on phone, tablet, and desktop. Preferences sync across devices the moment you sign in - start a journal entry on your phone between trades and finish the analysis on your laptop. There is no separate mobile app to install.
